We tend to think that we can set the temperature of the air conditioner to whatever level we want and let it do its job. However, there is always a limit to how much cooling the air conditioner can actually do compared to the temperature difference between the inside and outside air.

An air conditioning system is designed to regulate a difference of up to 20°C between the outside air and the inside air, while keeping the humidity level at around 55%, which is comfortable. This means that if the outside temperature is 27°C, your air conditioner can easily reach 22°C, as it only has a 5°C temperature difference.
So even if the outside temperature is 32°C, your air conditioner will still easily reach 27°C. However, if it is 38°C outside, it will be nearly impossible to reach 22°C inside without the air conditioner working overtime and causing problems such as excessive humidity.
There is a reason why most air conditioning systems are not designed to keep your home cool at 24°C on extremely hot days. To do this on a regular basis, your air conditioning system would need to be much larger and you would be paying for more air conditioning than you need, which would significantly increase your energy bill. If you set your air conditioning to a temperature that makes that difference greater than 20°C, it could run all day and still not reach the desired temperature. For the average household, this would be a waste of money as you overuse a system that is not designed to accommodate such a large change in cooling.
A good rule of thumb is that on the hottest days when the dial hits 38°C, it is best to set your air conditioning to somewhere between 24°C and 27°C. You can also make up for that small temperature difference by closing the curtains on the sunny side of the building, running a ceiling fan or table fan in the room where people live, and keeping a large glass of ice water handy.
